Getting Into Dark Academia? Here Are Some Things That You Should Know!

Welcome back lovelies!

“Though I can digress with the best of them, I am nothing in my soul if not obsessive.” - The Secret History (1992)

I know, I just ran out of excuses at this point in time of why I couldn't be so active lately. But, I've come back with something that's worth having a look at!

IT'S THE SPOOKY SEASON!

This means you get to hear me talk about everything that "Halloween". A pretty good reason for not dwelling on motivational/ mindful/ legal stuff!

This takes us to the topic for today: DARK ACADEMIA

Are you a fan of dark coffee, black, brown and vintage books and clothes, old castles, running around abandoned buildings, constantly visiting the library for the aesthetics and everything dark and eerie?

Well, my friend, you've come to the right place!

First things first,

WHAT EVEN IS DARK ACADEMIA?

Lately, I've been quite obsessed with it.

Well, it all began once I watched the movie- Dead Poets Society & The Secret History

I was obsessed with the aesthetics and thus realised that I'm in love with it!

However, just because you dress eerily or peak in a mysterious pretentious manner doesn't mean you really are into this aesthetic.

It's a huge area and you get to choose from any one or all of the aesthetics within this academia. It could be from the 1940s version of England to the Gothic Society! Whatever it is, it's your aesthetic.

It is centred around pretentiousness, poetry, wisdom, Latin and academics! If you're into sonnets by Shakespeare, this might be the one you'd like to check out.

And well, the law is one of the biggest aesthetics of this academia.

OUTFITS? WHAT ARE THOOOOSSSEEEEE?

I love outfits! Outfits make you unique. They represent how you feel.

Dark Academia outfits are just shades of black, brown, khaki, off white and nothing else! However, formals are the go-to. If you love wearing formals, well then, what are you waiting for?

HOW TO BE A DARK ACADEMICIAN RIGHT FROM HOME?

Not gonna lie, the ability to visit libraries and hang out in cemeteries (or maybe not) have been gravely limited due to the pandemic. And honestly, even before that, the limited use of libraries for the public made the dark academicians quite a rarity.

But, well, here is how you could be one pretentious dark academician-

  1. Feeling uninspired? Switch from your pyjamas to something that makes you look pretentious.

  2. The coolest form of pretentiousness is the ability to raise a single eyebrow. Maybe sit down and learn?

  3. Reorganise your space. Put up a candle, some hardbound books, place a mood-board or whatever that makes you happy on the table.

  4. Study. Legitimately. This aesthetic is "academia" for a reason. With all the pretentiousness that comes with it, I think it's important that you don't forget your goals. Being one of the academically brighter students in class is probably the darkest academic thing ever! So don't miss out on your academics.

  5. Latin maxims? Lifesavers! As law students, we learn a lot of Latin maxims during the course of our law school. So be that pretentious little creature and use them in your daily vocabulary.

  6. Well, enough with the pretentiousness. You may be wise, but be kind and mysterious. Go to cafes and enjoy spending time with yourself. It would make you happy. Be kind to yourself and to others. Don't let your pretentiousness get out of hand.
